Mental Health First Aid is an 8-hour course that teaches you how to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. The training helps you identify, understand, and respond to signs of addictions and mental illnesses. Just as CPR helps you assist an individual having a heart attack, Mental Health First Aid helps you assist someone experiencing a mental health or substance use-related crisis.

In the Mental Health First Aid course, you will learn risk factors and warning signs for mental health and addiction concerns, how to implement strategies and an action plan to help someone in both crisis and non-crisis situations, and professional and peer resources. Topics will include the following: depression and mood disorders, anxiety disorders, trauma, psychosis, and substance use disorders. This session will also teach attendees how to apply the Mental Health First Aid action plan in a variety of situations such as panic attacks, suicidal thoughts/behaviors, non-suicidal self-injury, acute psychosis, overdose or withdrawal from alcohol or drug use, and reactions to traumatic events.
